Comments A Type II Supernova occurs when a massive star explodes after its core first collapses (implode-explode).  This supernova was discovered by several amateur astronomers over the period 31 May - 02 June 2011.  For comparison, an earlier view of M51 without the supernova can be found by clicking here.
